Out of tune

"Deforestation" by adriansalamandre
In a choir where the keynote is wrong, it is necessary to raise a dissonant voice. This is what brave people have done throughout our history - to rise from sadness to a struggle over the ownership of the commons, like a tree.

Lyrics
People die all the time, its time for you to rest.
Let this blanket smother that quiver in your chest.
You said ”plant my body like a seed, cut my wrist and let me bleed!
To water this dry land will be my last good deed”.
Beneath me your last shiver; back to the anicent earth you are delivered.
I couldn't hear it then.
With your ear to the ground,
your bleeding heart below
could you hear the sound?

Imagine my surprise when I returned to that same spot.
In that burnt and shallow ground a tree had risen from your blood!
A poplar tree that ambitiously yearned for those pale skies,
like finally your weak heart had risen from the mud.
The wind in your leafs moaned and cried “all of your sins have been atoned”!
I couldn't hear it then.
With my ear to the ground,
your bleeding heart below
could you hear the sound?

I gathered all your friends to witness this strange thing.
We brought guitars, drums and accordions to play a hymn,
to dance and maybe sing. But before my trembling hand
had struck that guitar string - I was struck by disbelief.
I heard shrieks beyond the hill, in grief and lust I set out for the thief
I couldn't hear it then.
With your ear to the ground,
your bleeding heart below -
could you hear the sound?
Could you feel the tremble,
the chatter in your crown
did you know all this
when you made me plant a tree.

The machines sang their hymn, on the flesh of the ground a wound.
We rose against the monsters and sang songs out of tune.
I can hear it now.
With my ear to the ground
your bleeding heart below
can you hear the sound?
From where you are now
uprooted in decay
will you try to sing...
Out of tune.
